THE EQUINOX IN ECUADOR

Ecuador and the Andes Region

Ecuador is known as the middle of the world because it lies on the Equatorial line. It has four regions: jungle, coast, islands (Galapagos), and the Andean highlands. The Chimborazo Volcano, in the Ecuadorian Andes, is the closest point on Earth to the Sun. Most of the water in the Amazon, the “lungs of the world”, come from these mountains. In the local worldview volcanoes are seen as natural pyramids, the original temples that connect Earth and Sky.

The Equinoxes

Twice a year, during the Equinoxes, in March and September, Earth experiences a moment of perfect balance with equal amounts of light and darkness across both hemispheres; unlike the Solstices, when the Sun is nearest to the poles.

The Land with No Shadow

At the equator, on the two equinoxes, the sun is directly overhead at midday, causing our bodies to cast no shadow. This inspired the Incas to travel north to reach what they called “the land with no shadow” in their quest to build sacred sites to serve as portals for spiritual enhancement and transformation. Up until this day the Equinox is seen in the native cultures of Ecuador as an opportunity to restore balance within ourselves, providing a powerful opportunity for personal renewal, harmony, and manifestation.

SECOND LOCATION

CHOCÓ ANDINO RAINFOREST

We will stay for three nights in the Andean tropical rainforest of Chocó, recognized as the world’s #1 biodiversity hotspot. Once home to the Yumbos, a pre-Incan civilization, this region still holds a sacred waterfall and ceremonial pools. These primary and secondary rainforest are home to spectacled bears, jaguars, hundreds of bird species, and bioluminescent fungi. Our host, the Maquipucuna research station—an Ecuadorian NGO—focuses on conservation, preservation, and regeneration through strategic land purchases and by helping local communities find sustainable economic alternatives.

Power Hike With MASTER PLANT

After an intention-setting workshop to prepare our body and spirit, we will connect with Aguacolla—also known as Hanancolla, Wachuma, or San Pedro—a revered Andean plant medicine that opens and connects us with our heart. This gentle yet powerful ally sharpens our vision and strengthens us for a mindful walk through the forest, honoring the land and natural waters. We will finish the day gathered around a fire circle, sharing reflections on our journey.

IMABURA

We’ll spend two nights in the Imbabura region, known as the 'Land of Shamans.' This area is rich with forests, lakes, and waterfalls, and is home to artisanal families and wise elders who have preserved their traditional crafts and knowledge for generations.

PACHAMANKA

Our second Equinox celebration will take place at Pakarinka, a center devoted to preserve the ancestral wisdom of the Andes. Here, we’ll reconnect with nature through the Pachamanka, or "Earth Pot," a traditional ritual of cooking that honors the sacred gift of food and nourishment. Using steam from stones heated for hours in a sacred fire, this ancient practice invites us to heal and honor the divine feminine energy by deepening our conscious connection to the earth.

COCHASQUI

At midday, we’ll celebrate the Equinox at the ancient Cochasquí pyramids, a pre-Incan sacred site and astronomical observatory. Positioned on the equator and home to ancient lunar and solar calendars, this powerful location offers an ideal setting to open ourselves to the transformative energy of the Equinox. Following the ceremony, we’ll enjoy an amazing picnic on the hills overlooking this historic landscape.
