Tomar
THE TEMPLE OF THE TEMPLARS
In Tomar, the legacy of the Order of the Knight Templars is found on every corner. Centuries of mysteries and secrets, codes, symbols and power are found within Tomar’s historic monuments classified as World Heritage Sites by Unesco.
The Knights Templar, guided by their sister order, the Cistercians, carried the vision of a higher order of humanity. In the 12th century, an era when even the Pope wore the white robes of the Cistercians, they were granted the rare freedom to shape a realm of their own: the first independent nation-state. Upon the land of what is now Portugal they built a kingdom within a kingdom, a living experiment in compassion and wisdom. There, they established care for the elderly, learning for the young, and healing for those in need.
Within just two generations, they wove the foundations of what could only be called a utopia, a glimpse of what humanity might become when power serves with purpose and spiritual practices are decentralised.
